Dear Friend,
It was a productive week in Washington working on behalf of the Second Congressional District. In addition to voting to avert a government shutdown, I introduced a nutritional health bill to address critical health disparities affecting minority and underserved populations. I also joined my colleagues to celebrate the successes of the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law and the Inflation Reduction Act, highlighting the benefits they are bringing to Illinois. I will continue to advocate for our communities and see that these resources are available across our district.
Celebrating Two Years of the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law
This week marked the second anniversary of the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law. This monumental legislation is improving the lives of Illinoisans across our state through vital investments in water safety, transit, broadband, and so much more.
Thanks to the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, Illinois has received:
- $5.9 billion for highways
- $4.5 billion for public transit
- $1 billion for high-speed internet access
- $891.8 million for bridges
- $305.4 million for clean energy projects
- $751 million for water infrastructure
These unprecedented infrastructure investments strengthen our communities and build a foundation for greater prosperity in Illinois and across our nation.
The Medical Nutrition Therapy Act
Medical nutrition therapy is a proven method for alleviating the symptoms of many chronic illnesses. I am proud to introduce the Medical Nutrition Therapy Act to expand access to this vital treatment. This legislation is crucial in my ongoing efforts to eliminate health disparities, as many minority and underserved populations have long experienced adverse health outcomes due to limited access to healthcare, healthy foods, and opportunities for exercise.
National Diabetes Month
As Chair of the Congressional Black Caucus Health Braintrust, I was proud to stand with my colleagues to mark National Diabetes Month and discuss its disproportionate impact on Black Americans. Last year, Congress took critical steps to make insulin more affordable and capped insulin costs for seniors on Medicare to $35 per month. We’ve made so much progress, but we must do more to expand health care access for American families.
