A federal court struck down North Dakota's legislative maps, finding that the districts violate Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act (VRA). The Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa Indians, Spirit Lake Tribe and voters alleged the maps harm Native voters.

Since the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision in Allen v. Milligan voters across six states, including North Dakota, are all benefitting from Section 2’s protections against racially discriminatory redistricting plans.

Voters asked the Supreme Court to unpause a ruling ordering Galveston County, Texas to redraw commissioner districts. A lower court found that the districts violate the VRA, but the U.S. 5th Circuit Court of Appeals froze the order to redraw.

A federal judge rejected Miami officials' request to dismiss a lawsuit arguing that Miami's city commission districts are racially gerrymandered. The case will move forward.

Trial began in a lawsuit challenging Missouri's recently enacted strict voter ID law. Plaintiffs argue that the law’s photo ID restrictions violate the fundamental right to vote under the Equal Protection Clause of the Missouri Constitution. Read more about the case here.

The Michigan Legislature passed a bill last week that would greatly build on the state’s current automatic voter registration system and expand access to formerly incarcerated individuals.

A Republican group in Nevada filed ballot initiatives to establish an independent redistricting commission that would draw the state's congressional and legislative maps, removing map-drawing power from state lawmakers. The group hopes to get the measures on the 2024 ballot.
