This week, we celebrated two big wins for the District that will connect more Washingtonians to good-paying careers: the launch of our HBCU Public Service Program and the groundbreaking for the new DC Infrastructure Academy at the historic Spingarn High School.
Through our HBCU Public Service Program, a first-of-its-kind partnership with Howard University and the University of the District of Columbia, we will continue to bring the best and brightest HBCU graduates into DC Government.?
And with a new and bigger DC Infrastructure Academy we can train even more DC residents for careers in infrastructure. Since launching the DC Infrastructure Academy in 2018 as a partnership between District government and utility, union, university, and private sector partners, we have been able to train over 4,600 Washingtonians. A bigger academy at Spingarn means more programs and more opportunity.

What both of these programs reflect is that we have no shortage of talent in DC. We have people who are smart, passionate, and hard-working and who want to work in DC and make our community even stronger. Our goal with both of these programs is to find those people, train them, and make sure that they can stay and grow their careers in Washington, DC.

  Join the Mayor, community, and the Marion Barry Legacy Foundation for the Marion S. Barry Jr. street naming ceremony to celebrate Mayor Barry's legacy and service to the District. The ceremony and celebration will include food, activities, and live music and will be held tomorrow, Saturday, November 18, starting at 12:00 p.m. at 1800 Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue.
 On Saturday, December 2, join the Department of Parks and Recreation for a college prep and career readiness fair for youth ages 13-19. The event will provide an opportunity for teens to connect with resources and learn more about colleges, internships, job opportunities, military, workforce, and more.

 Families of kids ages 5-18 can now register to join one of the basketball winter leagues offered by the Department of Parks and Recreation. This year, practice for the winter basketball league will begin on November 20, and the season will start in January and run through March.
Youth basketball winter leagues are designed to give as many youth as possible the opportunity engage with their peers, be part of a team, and compete in basketball games. The program helps kids build coordination, speed, and strength and learn more about teamwork, respect, and good sportsmanship.
This year, the process of registering for the winter basketball leagues has changed. Required documentation must be uploaded and approved before registering youth. The documentation required includes: copy of birth certificate or state-issued ID and a sports physical of the participant.

On Wednesday, December 13, join the Department of Aging and Community Living for the 25th Annual Senior Holiday Celebration. The annual celebration will bring together seniors from across DC to enjoy music, dance, performances, food, and more!
