The Ohio State Highway Patrol, Ohio Department of Insurance, Ohio Department of Transportation, Ohio Department of Natural Resources, Ohio Turnpike and Infrastructure Commission, and AAA want to remind motorists of the increase in deer-related traffic crashes this time of year.

Statistics from the Ohio State Highway Patrol show there have been 104,328 deer-related crashes on Ohio?s roadways since 2018. While 95% of deer-related crashes resulted only in property damage, 33 crashes resulted in fatal injuries to motorists, with a total 34 people being killed. Additionally, 47% of these crashes occurred in October, November, and December.

?Ohio drivers should keep in mind that deer activity always increases during this time of year ? especially at dawn and dusk,? said Governor Mike DeWine. ?With Ohio?s strengthened distracted driving laws now in place, we anticipate that more drivers will stay alert to their surroundings, and as a result, we hope fewer deer-related crashes will take place this fall.?

Husted speaks at Ohio State University Partnership Announcement

Ohio Lt. Governor Jon Husted joined partners in industry, government, and academia to announce the creation of a new battery cell research and development center at The Ohio State University. The lab will help further position Ohio as the nation's leader in research and talent development in the emerging battery industry.

Governor DeWine attended the 2023 Ohio School Boards Association (OSBA) Capital Conference. The conference included leaders representing over 500 public school districts across the state.?

Governor DeWine announced [ [link removed] ] the formation of a new working group to examine the state of juvenile justice and corrections in Ohio.

The Ohio Juvenile Justice Working Group will be chaired by Tom Stickrath, former director of both the Ohio Department of Youth Services (DYS) and Ohio Department of Public Safety (DPS). Stickrath is also the current chair of the national Commission on Accreditation for Corrections.?

Governor DeWine has tasked the group with undergoing a thorough, holistic review of juvenile justice operations at DYS and of the agency's partnerships with county juvenile detention facilities.?The group will review and offer recommendations on a wide range of topics including, but not limited to, youth safety, education, reentry support, and health and mental health services. The group will also examine?staffing levels and staff safety, training, recruitment, and retention.?

Governor DeWine, Lt. Governor Husted convene Meeting of Governor?s Executive Workforce Board

Governor DeWine and Lt. Governor Husted convened the meeting of the Governor's Executive Workforce Board where they?announced [ [link removed] ] that the application period for Ohio's Teacher Bootcamp Program is now open for institutions of higher education.?Teacher bootcamps bring educators into local businesses to help expose them to the in-demand career skillsets their communities need so they can better prepare students to be career ready upon graduation.?

?This kind of real-world experience will give our teachers a better understanding of what businesses are looking for when they hire, allowing teachers to better prepare students,? said Governor DeWine. ?This is another tool teachers have to help their students be college or career ready after graduation.?

"Education and student preparedness are most effective when there is collaboration between the private and public sectors. This is the driving force behind the initiation of teacher bootcamps," said Lt. Governor Husted. "During these programs, teachers are immersed in the local business community, gaining insights into various careers and understanding the essential skills students require for success. Armed with this knowledge, educators return to their schools better equipped to provide students with the necessary tools and guidance for a prosperous career path."

First Lady DeWine attends 10th Anniversary Celebration of the Greene County Imagination Library Program

Ohio First Lady Fran DeWine celebrated [ [link removed] ]the 10th?anniversary of Greene County?s Imagination Library Program with hundreds of Greene County families currently receiving free books in the program.

?It?s wonderful that the Greene County Public Library has supported and promoted Dolly Parton?s Imagination Library for a decade, helping thousands of Ohio families over the years,? said First Lady DeWine. ?I?m grateful that Greene County continues to support early childhood literacy and be a leader for other county Imagination Library programs around Ohio.?

Husted visited Sandusky City Schools

Lt. Governor Husted participated in a roundtable discussion and tour at Sandusky City Schools in Sandusky. The school received a $4.8 million grant through the Career Technical Construction Program, [ [link removed] ] which will help them expand their welding fabrication program to serve 30 additional students.

Governor DeWine meeting with NTSB following the I-70 bus crash

Governor DeWine met with first responders, held media briefings, and visited a reunification center in Etna after five vehicles, including a charter bus carrying students from the Tuscarawas Valley Local School District, crashed Tuesday morning on I-70 in Licking County.

Three students, a teacher, and two chaperones died in the crash and 18 others were injured.

"Fran and I are praying for everyone involved in the bus crash east of Columbus today. It is our worst nightmare to have a bus full of children involved in such a terrible crash, and it is certainly the worst nightmare that families and schools can endure," Governor DeWine said on the day of the crash.

On Wednesday, Governor DeWine met with National Transportation Safety Board Chair Jennifer Homendy, who will be leading the team collecting evidence and looking into the cause of the crash.

In honor of the lives of those killed in the Tuscarawas Valley Local School District bus crash, Governor DeWine? ordered the flags of the United States of America and the state of Ohio to be?flown at half-staff upon all public buildings and grounds throughout Tuscarawas and Stark counties, at the Ohio Statehouse, Vern Riffe Center, and Rhodes Tower from sunrise on Nov. 15, 2023 until sunset on Nov. 18, 2023.

In honor of the life and service of former U.S. Congressman, State Senator, and State Representative Ronald Mottl, Governor DeWine ordered the flags of the United States of America and the state of Ohio to be?flown at half-staff upon all public buildings and grounds throughout the city of Parma and at the Ohio Statehouse, Vern Riffe Center, and Rhodes Tower from sunrise to sunset on November 15, 2023.

In honor of the life and service of former State Representative Charles ?Chuck? Calvert, Governor DeWine ordered the flags of the United States of America and the state of Ohio to be?flown at half-staff upon all public buildings and grounds throughout Rittman Township and at the Ohio Statehouse, Vern Riffe Center, and Rhodes Tower from sunrise to sunset on Nov. 15, 2023.

First Lady DeWine announced a new partnership between Dolly Parton's Imagination Library of Ohio and Wright-Patterson Air Force Base.

First Lady DeWine and Col. Christopher Meeker announced [ [link removed] ] a new partnership between Dolly Parton?s Imagination Library of Ohio and Wright-Patterson Air Force Base. The base is committed to elevating awareness about the Imagination Library program, so that the 35,000 military, civilian, and contractor families associated with it are encouraged to enroll their young family members and receive free books. This is one of the first Imagination Library partnerships with a military installation in the country. ?

?Research shows that early childhood literacy is so very important, and I?m grateful that leaders at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base are choosing to be leaders in literacy for their families,? said Ohio First Lady DeWine. ?Together, we are committed to supporting more?military-connected families and providing a model for other military bases around the country.?

Husted Harvests Eight-Point Buck, Gun Season Starts November 27th

Lt. Governor Husted harvested an eight-point whitetail buck [ [link removed] ] in Morrow County last week with a 10-point crossbow made right here in Ohio.

?I love crossbow hunting during the fall,? said Lt. Governor Husted. ?The weather is mild, the trees are beautiful, the harvesting of crops is active, the aroma in the air is refreshing, and there is so much activity in the outdoors with the animals in the forest actively preparing for winter. It?s peaceful and wonderful.?

Second Lady Tina Husted shares the Lt. Governor?s excitement for the harvest. ?Jon?s avid hunting has blessed our family over the years, filling our freezer with high-quality Ohio deer meat that will nourish our family in the winter months. I make a mean deer stew, and I?m looking forward to that first meal from this harvest.?

One of Ohio?s most anticipated fall traditions begins soon during the annual white-tailed deer gun hunting seasons. Ohio?s youth hunting season is Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 18-19.?Gun hunters of all ages can participate in the upcoming seven-day gun season from Monday, Nov. 27 through Sunday, Dec. 3.

Governor DeWine spoke at the National Council of Insurance Legislators Annual Meeting.?

This group is made up of?state insurance committee chairs (legislators) from across the country, lobbyists, and insurance company representatives. At the conference, they discussed best practices and adopted model laws for the legislators to take back to their states' general assemblies.?

Lt. Governor Husted, who serves as director of the Governor?s Office of Workforce Transformation, announced [ [link removed] ] the results of the September round of TechCred, in which 480 employers were approved for funding, providing the opportunity for Ohioans to earn 5,289 tech-focused credentials, setting a record for the most employers awarded and credentials funded in a single round.

?With each round of TechCred, we see more and more Ohio businesses utilizing this funding opportunity to upskill or reskill their workforce,? said Lt. Governor Husted. ?Ohio needs to stay on top, and this program helps us build and maintain the strong workforce we need.?

Governor DeWine and First Lady DeWine meeting with community leaders in East Palestine

While meeting with community leaders in East Palestine on Friday, Governor DeWine and Ohio Department of Development Director Lydia Mihalik announced [ [link removed] ] that the state will award the village of East Palestine $150,000 to help support the purchase of new emergency response equipment.

East Palestine, which was the site of February's Norfolk Southern train derailment, previously secured grant funding from the federal government to partially cover the cost of?two 8-ton dump trucks, a 1-ton utility bed truck, and?a drone. To reduce the amount of local funding necessary to cover the difference, the?Governor?s Office of Appalachia is contributing?$150,000, representing?more than 65% of the required local match.?

?This funding is another example of our administration?s continued commitment to the East Palestine community,? said Governor DeWine. ?This investment will significantly reduce East Palestine's share of expenses associated with this new equipment."

Following the meeting with community leaders, Governor DeWine and First Lady DeWine visited East Palestine High School to meet with students in the science club and culinary class. To round out the visit, the?Governor and First Lady visited the derailment site and the water treatment plant.?

Ohio EPA Director Anne Vogel, Ohio Department of Development Director Mihalik, Ohio Department of Health Director Dr. Bruce Vanderhoff, Ohio Bureau of Workers' Compensation Administrator John Louge, and Governor's Office of Appalachia Director John Carey joined Governor DeWine and First Lady DeWine for the visit.??
