Friend, Senate Republicans’ ultimate goal is to defund public schools and privatize our education system. And here’s how they plan to do it:
- Arming minimally trained security guards in schools. Studies show that not only does arming security guards increase the likelihood of a school shooting — it creates an environment of fear for our students that leads to more absences and poorer class performance.
- Banning books. Book bans disproportionately exclude LGBTQIA+ authors and writers of color from school curricula. They sow distrust in our educators, restrict students’ freedom of expression, and they limit the diversity of perspectives our students can learn from.
- Enacting school voucher programs. We know that students perform worse in public schools under armed supervision and with teachers’ expertise under fire. Republicans will make public schools functionally inoperable in order to take the next step to privatize our education system. They’ll present these school voucher programs — which will further strip our public schools of critical funding — as the “solution” to the issues they created.
We don’t need these terrible bills to strengthen our public schools — we just need to get them more funding, friend.
