Last week, Social Security Works organized a letter to Congress opposing the creation of a so-called “fiscal commission” designed to fast-track cuts to Social Security and Medicare behind closed doors.

In short order, over 100 organizations signed on.¹

Why such urgency from these groups, many of whom don’t focus every day on retirement security? It’s because Speaker Mike Johnson used his very first speech after taking the gavel to demand the “immediate” creation of such a commission. The threat is extremely real.

This week, just after Johnson announced a deal to keep the government funded with more votes from Democrats than members of his own party, reports began to swirl about dissatisfaction in the GOP.²

Whether it’s because he’s a die-hard ideologue (he is)³ or to shore up support within his own caucus, this week Johnson announced a hearing to begin the commission process.

Social Security Works was formed to protect Social Security and Medicare from a commission just like the one Speaker Johnson is creating. Republicans want to call this a “bipartisan” commission. And all they need is one Democrat to go along.
