John –

Did you see the news about the Supreme Court adopting a code of conduct for justices? I have two thoughts to share with you.

First, we’re making a difference. I’ve been leading the fight in Congress to hold the Supreme Court accountable, and you’ve been right there alongside me. Thank you for your support. It’s having a big impact. Thanks to us, the Court finally realizes it has a huge legitimacy problem.

But my second point is this: The code of conduct the Supreme Court announced doesn’t go nearly far enough. Sure, it identifies some (not all) of the problems, but it doesn’t do anything to fix them.

There’s no objective enforcement mechanism, and therefore, there’s no accountability. We’re supposed to just trust that justices like Thomas and Alito will suddenly start behaving themselves.

That hasn’t worked so far, and it’s not going to start to magically work now.

Luckily, I already wrote and introduced the solution: the Supreme Court Ethics, Recusal, and Transparency (SCERT) Act, which will create an enforceable code of conduct for Supreme Court justices and implement standards so that Americans won’t be forced to just take Clarence Thomas’ word for it.

Chief Justice Roberts and the conservative justices on the Court are hoping this news will take the wind out of our sails and get me off their backs. But I’m not resting until we have true accountability on the Supreme Court.

Will you help me keep up the momentum by making a contribution toward my end-of-week fundraising goal now and show the far right that the Court MUST be accountable to the American people?
