LA Times suspends reporters who signed letter ripping Israel from covering war: Report

The Los Angeles Times is preventing employees who signed onto a letter highly critical of Israel and western media coverage from reporting on the Israel-Hamas war "for at least three months," per a recent Semafor report. More than 1,200 current and former journalists have signed onto a public letter from Nov. 9 condemning "Israel's killing of journalists in Gaza" and calling for "integrity in Western media coverage of Israel's atrocities against Palestinians."

Los Angeles Police Seek Public Assistance In Locating Violent Murder Suspect

Los Angeles police detectives asked for the public's help Thursday to locate a murder suspect who may suffer from mental illness and is considered violent and dangerous. Jacob William James McFadden, a 28-year-old registered sex offender, allegedly assaulted a man around 7:40 p.m. Oct. 30 at the intersection of Wilshire Boulevard and Kingsley Drive. Police said McFadden assaulted the 59- year-old victim until witnesses intervened, and the suspect fled south on Kingsley. The victim was taken to a hospital and died from his injuries on Nov. 6, police said. His name was withheld pending notification of next of kin. McFadden was described as a 6-foot-1-inch Black man who weighs 175 pounds with black hair and brown eyes. He has tattoos on his chest, left shoulder and near his right eye, according to the LAPD. Anyone with information on McFadden's whereabouts was asked to call LAPD Detective Allen Hsiaoat 213-382-9470. Apparent Murder-Suicide Under Investigation In Sylmar

An investigation is underway following what may have been a murder-suicide Thursday at a home in Sylmar. The Los Angeles Police Department said it received a call of a shooting at 7:41 p.m. and responded to the 13800 block of Tucker Avenue. There, two people were found dead from gunshot wounds. LAPD described the victims as a man and a woman who appeared to be in their 50s. Their relationship, if any, was unclear. Neighbors said they didn’t hear any commotion leading up to the shooting. A man told NBC4 that his brother was somehow involved in the incident. “It’s really safe and calm and family-oriented,” one neighbor said. “Nothing ever happens here, so I have no idea.” Paramedics were held outside for roughly an hour until law enforcement cleared the home. Police said three people were inside the residence when the gunshots rang out. Two adults and an infant were removed from the home and are OK, according to LAPD. The investigation is ongoing.

Man Fatally Shot After Fight In Reseda Alleyway, LAPD Says

A man was fatally shot in a Reseda alleyway after fighting his suspected killer. The man, 35, and the shooter had a physical altercation in the alley behind the 19500 block of Vanowen Street at about 10 p.m., according to the Los Angeles Police Department. The shooter opened fire at least once, striking the man before fleeing the scene. The victim was taken to a local hospital in critical condition, but he was pronounced dead upon arrival. The victim was not homeless, and the incident was not gang-related, police said.

Chase Ends After 2 Women With Dog In Tow Abandon Stolen Pickup Truck In Downtown LA

A high-speed chase ended Thursday evening in downtown Los Angeles when two women and a leashed dog abandoned a stolen truck. The two suspects were quickly taken into custody by authorities. The Los Angeles Police Department was initially the lead agency in the pursuit as it made its way through the Boyle Heights area on the 60 Freeway. The female suspect behind the wheel managed to find gaps in rush-hour traffic as she later transitioned onto the 605 Freeway in the San Gabriel Valley. With a law-enforcement helicopter's "night sun" shining brightly on the truck, the vehicle exited onto surface streets in the El Monte area before entering the 10 Freeway and heading back toward downtown L.A. Several California Highway Patrol units kept pace behind the suspect, with their emergency lights flashing. Shortly before 7 p.m., the driver approached the ongoing closure of the 10 Freeway in downtown L.A. and decided to again exit onto local streets.

Watch: Tow Truck Slams Into Nearly A Dozen Cars In Chaotic Rollover Crash

A tow truck sliding on its roof crashed into about a dozen cars in a crash caught on camera early Friday in a South Los Angeles neighborhood. At least two people, the tow truck driver and a Toyota Prius driver, were hospitalized following the crash at about 2:30 a.m. outside an apartment complex. Details about their conditions were not immediately available. Video showed the tow truck sliding on its roof as it slammed into about eight parked cars and three moving cars. The tow truck initially crashed into two moving cars before rolling onto its roof. The truck and at least one other car ended up on their sides. The crash left behind a street strewn with debris and car wreckage. One car ended up against the stairwell of a home. Details about what led to the crash were not immediately available, but authorities said it appears one of the drivers ran a red light.

Los Angeles Police Seek Owners Of Over 50 Stolen Luxury Purses

Police in Los Angeles are searching for the owners of over 50 luxury purses that were believed to have been stolen in residential burglaries across Southern California. Karla Sunceri, 51, of Mission Hills, was arrested by the Los Angeles Police Department in connection with the luxury handbag theft operation. Following an extensive investigation, the LAPD's Major Theft Task Force executed a search warrant at Sunceri's residence on McKeever Street in Granada Hills on Nov. 1, 2023, around 6 a.m. The search uncovered more than 50 stolen luxury purses and a significant amount of cash. The investigation revealed that the majority of the stolen purses were obtained through residential burglaries across Southern California. Sunceri was arrested for receiving stolen property and was booked at Van Nuys Jail. She was subsequently released on zero bail.

Man Arrested After Allegedly Pointing Gun At Larchmont Charter School In West Hollywood

Larchmont Charter School in West Hollywood was placed on lockdown early Thursday after a man allegedly got out of his car and pointed what appeared to be a long rifle at the school during student drop-off. The unnerving incident prompted Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department to launch an investigation as they swept the campus, located in the 1200 block of N. Fairfax Avenue. All students and staff members are safe, according to a statement from Larchmont school officials. "This morning at the end of carpool, a man drove through the lot in his car and emerged with a gun and pointed it in the direction of the school," the statement, which was sent to parents of the student body, said. "No shots were actually fired that we are aware of." Authorities urged the public to stay away from the scene as they continue their investigation.

Man Involved In Colorado Officer's Death Sentenced To 27 Years In Prison

Two of the people involved in the incident that led to the death of Fountain police officer Julian Becerra earlier this year were in court Wednesday, with one of the two men being sentenced to 27 years in prison for his involvement. Anthony Vallejos, 33, appeared in court in the morning for his sentencing hearing while Devon Bobian, 32, appeared in court in the afternoon for his preliminary hearing. According to previous Gazette reporting, Bobian, Vallejos and Daniesha Pacheco were arrested in February after stealing a car and leading multiple law enforcement agencies on a chase throughout El Paso County. Eventually, the driver, alleged to be Bobian, lost control on a bridge, crashed, and all three of the defendants attempted to flee on foot. The affidavit for Bobian's arrest states that, while attempting to apprehend the trio, Becerra fell off the bridge and fell about 40 feet. Earlier this year Vallejos accepted a plea agreement that saw him plead guilty to one count of aggravated robbery with a deadly weapon, a Class 3 felony, for his involvement in the incident. Bobian faces eight charges for his involvement, including a second-degree murder charge as the prosecution alleges it was Bobian's actions that led to the death of Becerra.

Kansas K-9 Strangled To Death After Pursuing Suspect Into A Storm Drain

A wanted 24-year-old Wichita man was arrested after running from police, hiding in a storm drain and then strangling to death a K-9, Wichita police spokesperson Juan Rebolledo said Thursday. Police were looking for the man in connection with a robbery and domestic violence battery, Rebolledo said. Police were patrolling an area around White Oak and Hildreth in southeast Wichita when they spotted the man walking. The man ran into a nearby creek bed and then went into a large storm drain, Rebolledo said. The Sedgwick County Sheriff's Office responded along with police. The sheriff's office released K-9 Bane into the storm drain. "He strangled (the) K-9 to death," Rebolledo said. First responders tried to rescuscitate the dog for 30 to 40 minutes, he said. Sheriff Jeff Easter said a necropsy would be done to confirm the cause of death. Lt. Aaron Moses said Bane used to work for the police department but now worked for the sheriff's office. Bane was a Belgian Malinois; his former handler, officer Daniel Gumm, died of cancer last year.

Los Angeles General Looking To Identify 2 More Patients

Officials at Los Angeles General Medical Center are again asking for the public’s help to identify patients that are currently hospitalized. On Thursday, the Los Angeles County Department of Health Services released images of two men who have been hospitalized for several days, neither of which have been properly identified. The first is a man who has been hospitalized since Nov. 8. He’s estimated to be around 55 years old, standing 5 feet 7 inches and weighing about 215 pounds. He has a heavy build, brown hair and green eyes, hospital officials said. The man also has “very distinctive tattoos.” The hospital is also trying to identify a second patient who has been hospitalized since Nov. 12. He’s estimated to be about 30 years old, standing 5 feet 6 inches and weighing 168 pounds. He has an “average build,” black hair and black eyes, the hospital said.
