Dear Friends,
We are proud to release our FY2022-2023 Annual Report! This year was a tremendously challenging year as pandemic relief disappeared, causing 30% of Philadelphia residents to have less to spend on groceries while food cost remained high and food distribution programs struggled to keep up with demand.
Here are a few highlights of what we were able to accomplish:
Connected our VIP partners with over $38,000 in funding for their programs and food distribution.
Materials we created with partners were used by the Department of Human Services (DHS) for their messaging to SNAP clients about the loss of SNAP Emergency Allotments.
Cultivated 7 new relationships with trusted community organizations serving Spanish speaking immigrant communities as a part of our work to reduce barriers for historically marginalized communities.
“As we reflect on the past year, we approach the new year with stronger internal systems, gratitude for your support, and our team’s tenacity to address the root causes of food insecurity . . . with hope that someday the Coalition will no longer need to exist.” – Melody Keim, Executive Director
Keeping the Government Funded: This week, Congress passed a short-term spending package that will keep the government open into the new year, ensuring that families will not be subject to the turmoil of a government shutdown during the holiday season.
We are happy that the government will remain funded through the new year, but the short term spending package did not include additional funding for WIC (Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children). While Congress works to reach a full-year budget deal, we will continue to tell our legislators that WIC must be fully funded in the coming appropriations compromise, and we hope that you will join us in doing the same.
Food Insecurity Rates: Last month, the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) released their report, Household Food Insecurity Rates in the United States in 2022. The results are sobering and show that food insecurity rates have increased significantly, with 44.2 million individuals experiencing food insecurity in 2022. These trends are likely driven by the end of Pandemic-related policies and programs that helped families put food on the table, reminding us that food insecurity is a policy choice.
The holiday season is in full swing. During this time of year, many emergency food providers will serve their largest meals of the entire year, and they need volunteers and food donations to make it happen. We've compiled a list of what our partners need in order to make their holiday food distributions a success.
GivingTuesday is a largest day of global generosity, giving people and organizations the power to transform their communities. While we know there are many causes worthy of support this GivingTuesday, we hope you will consider donating to the Coalition Against Hunger as we raise funds to further our mission to ensure all Philadelphians have the food they need to lead healthy lives. Add the date to your calendar below and stay tuned for more details.
