Friend, America’s recycling and waste management infrastructure is failing.

Plastic pollution is one of the many less obvious ways fossil fuels like petroleum continue to harm communities in California and across the country.

Throughout the U.S., corporate polluters pump out single-use plastic packaging without taking responsibility for the devastating impact they have. While single-use plastics pile up in ineffective recycling facilities and landfills around the country, the factories that produce them damage surrounding ecosystems and communities with toxic petrochemicals.

Major corporations should not be pumping our communities full of hazardous chemicals and single-use plastic while leaving the rest of us to deal with the fallout — and foot the bill.

Friend, we already have huge challenges before us — protecting critical ecosystems, ending our reliance on fossil fuels, and helping workers in impacted industries transition to new, good-paying jobs in the sustainable economy of the future.

We need corporations and manufacturers to clean up after themselves, not make the problem worse with toxic pollutants.

Earlier this year, we saw some of the biggest corporations in the country — including Microsoft, Apple, and IKEA — throw their support behind our landmark emissions disclosure legislation SB 253 because ordinary people like you helped build a movement that couldn’t be ignored.

Let’s do that again by passing the Break Free from Plastic Pollution Act.

Thanks for being with us.
