Dear neighbor,

For the second time in as many months, House Democrats came together to govern from the minority and avert an extreme MAGA Republican government shutdown. Just as we did to prevent an extreme MAGA default on our debt and avoid the previous Republican shutdown threat, this week House Democrats came together and put people over politics to keep our government open. Democrats provided the majority of the votes necessary to keep the government from shutting down.

Now that government funding has been extended, we will continue pressing Republicans to abandon their extreme agenda of slashing Social Security and criminalizing abortion. We hope they will join House Democrats as we work to deliver for American families.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, INFRASTRUCTURE LAW! This week marked the second anniversary of the historic infrastructure law! Since its passage, the infrastructure law has been building safer, cleaner, and more accessible transportation systems in communities across the country and creating millions of jobs along the way. In our district in Los Angeles County, the infrastructure law supported Metro’s Purple Line extension in West LA, connecting the West LA VA and UCLA with Central Los Angeles. I was honored to vote in favor of this historic legislation and attend the bill signing ceremony at the White House two years ago. We’re not done yet—House Democrats will continue to deliver for the people.

LOWERING CONSUMER COSTS: Democrats recognize that prices for essentials like food and gas are still far too high. As our society and economy continue to recover from the global COVID-19 pandemic, many Americans are having trouble making ends meet. That is why last Congress Democrats made historic investments through the infrastructure law, the Inflation Reduction Act, and the CHIPS and Science Act to create better paying jobs and lower costs. Democrats are bringing supply chains and clean energy jobs back home, fixing our roads and bridges, and delivering clean water and high-speed internet to more homes. We’re investing in America to grow the middle class.

As a result we received more positive economic news this week. Thanks to Bidenomics, pandemic-related inflation continued to fall in October as unemployment remained under 4%, the longest stretch of record-low unemployment in over 50 years. Democrats are united to get results for American families and it’s working—but we’re not letting up any time soon.

10 FREEWAY UPDATE: Following a fire beneath an underpass, the 10 freeway is closed for repairs. Governor Newsom announced this week that thanks to dedicated crews working around the clock, the 10 will reopen this Tuesday rather than the original projection of three to five weeks! If you're traveling this weekend, Metro has made it easier than ever to get around the city hassle-free via bus and rail. For real-time updates on the status of repairs and to find alternate travel routes, visit Fixthe10.ca.gov. You can also monitor traffic news and other announcements from CalTrans and Mayor Karen Bass.

Here’s what else I worked on this week:

  • Spoke at Santa Monica’s Veterans Day event. I’m grateful every day for our heroes who have so courageously and selflessly served our nation.
  • Joined a roundtable conversation about artificial intelligence and social media at Cornell University.
  • Sent a letter calling on House leadership to reject cuts to rental assistance funding alongside my colleagues in the House Renters Caucus.
  • Hosted our annual Conversations with Veterans event honoring local veterans. We listened to stories shared by eight veterans from the Air Force, Marine Corps, Army and Navy. In case you missed it, check out a recording of the full event below.
