We need to talk about Sudan.

UN Humanitarian and Emergency Relief Chief Martin Griffiths just declared it “one of the worst humanitarian nightmares in recent history.”

24.7 million people — about half the population of Sudan — need humanitarian aid and protection from the ongoing civil strife. Around 2.6 million people are displaced inside Sudan, including an estimated 53,000 pregnant women.

80% of Sudan’s hospitals are out of service. Assets and supplies have been looted or destroyed and fuel to operate generators is in short supply. In neighboring countries, infrastructure and basic services are poor and stretched thin.

The risk of sexual violence is especially high when women and girls are on the move seeking safer locations, both inside Sudan and across borders.

As fighting continues in Sudan, we cannot look away from the women and girls whose needs are going overlooked while fleeing violence.

Thanks to your gifts, UNFPA is deploying midwives, mobile teams, and supplies to meet the health and protection needs of displaced women and girls.

UNFPA has reached 141,00 people with life-saving services, distributed 19,369 Dignity Kits , and connected 16,122 survivors of violence with services such as clinical management of rape, psychosocial support, and violence case management.

Enough sexual and reproductive health supplies to cover the needs of 500,000 people were delivered to impacted regions in Sudan.

UNFPA has been supporting five facilities in Sudan’s capital to provide emergency obstetric and neonatal care services. Enough medicine has been delivered to provide a lifeline for over 168,000 women during pregnancy and childbirth.
