What's in a name?
The most common coat color of the red fox is a shade of red, with grayish, black, and white accents. There are other color phases or morphs: the silver fox (whose coat can be silver to nearly black) and the cross fox, with a reddish brown coat, one black stripe down the back, and another across the shoulders.

Cross foxes, a melanistic form of red foxes, are found throughout much of the northern hemisphere, from the Arctic circle across North America to Central America, central Asia, and northern Africa. At 8 to 12 pounds, these small animals may be the most widespread mammal, after humans! |
