Peregrine falcons, the fastest and most widely distributed bird of prey, inspire awe in all who catch a glimpse of them.?Even though peregrines have increased in numbers since they disappeared completely from the state for nearly 30 years, these falcons remain vulnerable due to their modest numbers and sensitivity to nesting disturbance. Despite these challenges, partners in both urban and forested landscapes can work to ensure population stability.?

Current conservation efforts in Maine include broadening partnerships and outreach efforts, mortality and disease monitoring, contribution to regional banding efforts, breeding surveys, and the development of a long-range strategic species conservation plan.

In 2023, 34 nest sites were monitored. Here, 37 chicks were produced by 17 successful nesting peregrine pairs. This year?s productivity was lower than 2022 but comparable to the previous three years.
