Dear Friends,
Nowhere in the Gaza Strip has been safe for journalists since Israel launched its armed response to the shocking attack by Hamas on 7 October. Whether they are out in the open, working in press tents set up near hospitals, or working in their homes or makeshift shelters with their loved ones, the reporters who continue to cover this war are in constant danger of being killed.
Reporters Without Borders (RSF) is in permanent contact with these journalists, who have provided heartrending accounts of the environment in which they are working.
“We are under constant pressure with bombardments everywhere, from the air, land and sea,” said Adel Al Zaanoon, Agence France-Presse’s correspondent in Gaza ([link removed]) for the past 27 years, describing the ordeal he now endures every day.
“I was injured when the house next to the one where we’d found refuge was bombarded,” said Ola Al Zaanoon, RSF’s correspondent in Gaza since 2018 ([link removed]) , who had to be hospitalised for this injury, sustained after fleeing an Israeli strike near Rafah.
“The scenes of bloodshed leave indelible scars on our souls as journalists bearing witness to these scenes, whether the bombardments themselves or their aftermath,” said Hani Alshaer, a reporter for local and international media in Gaza ([link removed]) , describing what reporting on the ground is like for him and his colleagues.
RSF is taking many initiatives to help the journalists in Gaza who are risking their lives to keep us informed, and we are issuing urgent appeals for their protection. Your support is essential so that we can continue to help them.
