Barbara Grutter was no stranger to challenge. She worked in a doctor’s office while getting her bachelor of science degree in 1978. She raised two small children while learning information systems. She then founded an IT consulting business while studying for law school.

In 1996, at the age of 43, Barbara took the LSAT, scored in the top 15 percent of her peers, applied to the University of Michigan Law School, was rejected, filed a civil rights lawsuit, and six years later, lost at the Supreme Court.

Although Barbara’s case is long since decided, Erin Wilcox explains how the questions she raised and the justice she sought are again seeing momentum in the judicial landscape.
