John,
I want to thank everyone who submitted their thoughts on my
COVID-19 (coronavirus) public comment form last week. Reading
over the responses, I get a real sense of overwhelming anxiety
from everyone.
That’s why the House leapt into action last week to pass
emergency legislation to fund our fight against COVID-19. We
passed $8.3 billion in emergency funding that will go toward the
Centers for Disease Control (CDC), National Institutes of Health
(NIH) vaccine research, and money to ensure all Americans will
have access to a vaccine regardless of their ability to pay.
But despite this action from
Congress, it has become painfully clear that one of the biggest
impediments to solving this public health crisis is the president
himself.
President Trump has been more
concerned about the stock market than everyday Americans, and now
both are suffering because of his deceitful, misleading
communications on COVID-19.
Donald Trump has contradicted his
own scientists and doctors, and made absurd allegations about
COVID-19 that have hampered our effort to respond to this crisis.
Here are just a few of Trump’s mind-blowing claims and actions:
* Continuously misstated the total number of cases in the United
States, trying to cover up the impact of this disease and spread
across the country.
* Claimed with no evidence that coronavirus might “miraculously”
just disappear “in the spring.”
* Given false timelines on how long it will take to produce a
vaccine.
* Contradicted the World Health Organizations’ (WHO) death rate
estimate, saying that he has a “hunch” the death rate is lower
than scientists have estimated.
* Tried to pressure people to go to work while sick, saying that
some people “go to work” and just “get better."
* In 2018, he shutdown the White House National Security
Council’s entire global health security unit.
* Blamed Barack Obama for there not being enough coronavirus testing, a
claim that nobody in his administration can explain.
John --
When faced with a public health crisis, I would much prefer to
rally around the president and support his efforts in resolving
it. However, in this case it is clear that President Trump is a
part of the public health crisis.
Time is ticking, and that’s why I am determined to hold our
president accountable and demand that he stop making false,
misleading, or absurd statements on this matter. As I take this
crucial fight on, I hope to have your support.
Yours,
Hank
PS: He could start by reinstating
the White House National Security Council’s entire global health
security unit he shut down in 2018.
