Hi, During the Biden presidency, Mitch McConnell and the GOP have used the filibuster to block several pieces of pro-democracy legislation to protect elections and voting rights. President Biden has a lot of power and tools to combat corruption and protect democracy with the stroke of a pen. We need him to take action by signing executive orders that will strengthen our democracy. In many states, especially in the South, Republican policymakers have been pushing to implement strict voter ID laws. Texas introduced a voter ID bill in 2013 that a federal court found unconstitutional because it discriminated against Black people and other voters of color.1 Strict voter ID laws and partisan gerrymandering are just two of the tactics that Republicans have and will continue to use to hurt our democracy. With an executive order, President Biden can direct the DOJ to create a high-profile task force to monitor and uphold election integrity nationwide. Not only are Republicans pushing to suppress the vote, but they’re also funneling shady, dark money through our elections. Senate Republican candidates have been relying on massive cash flows from dark money groups during election season.2 These dark-money groups are able to avoid disclosing their top donors — violating public trust and incentivizing corruption in our democracy. In 2022, Republicans in the Senate voted against a bill that would require organizations to make public the names of individuals who donate more than $10,000 during a cycle.3 Republicans at every turn are blocking change, allowing corruption, and attacking our democracy. President Biden can sign executive orders and unilaterally address many of these GOP attacks. He mentioned that protecting democracy is the “central issue” of his presidency — he must now back his words up with further action. Add your name: Tell President Biden to act now and protect democracy from GOP attacks. Thanks for taking action, Sources:
