Legislative Updates

It was a very productive final stretch in Lansing as we prepared to adjourn for the year. Last week, my colleagues and I passed transparency legislation that would require financial disclosures for legislators and other state leaders. Michigan has consistently ranked as one of the least transparent states in the country, and I was thrilled that we were able to pass these strong disclosure laws that will help hold lawmakers accountable. Additionally, we were able to pass bills that protect our election workers by increasing penalties for intimidation or preventing an election worker from performing their duties.

I’m also very pleased to share that Senate Bill 463, my bill to require universal FAFSA completion with key opt-outs, passed the Senate. As a first-generation college student, I’ve seen the power of FAFSA firsthand and know that having more Michigan students complete it will help them realize what opportunities are available to them and improve postsecondary outcomes statewide. I’m incredibly proud of the work that we’ve done to get this legislation passed, but we still have more to do. I will be continuing to advocate for this bill as it is considered in the House of Representatives, and will keep you updated as this legislation progresses. I’ve spoken before about how much financial aid is left on the table each year in Michigan, and I’m hopeful that we can get this bill across the finish line and help more students know their options and realize their full potential.

Community Updates

Thank you to everyone who joined us at Kekoa Coffee Co. for our November Coffee Hour! We were joined by more than 50 of our neighbors for a group conversation about the issues that we’re facing in our communities. We appreciate everyone who participated in this dialogue and would like to give a huge thank you to Kekoa Coffee Co. for hosting us. We will be hosting our final coffee hour of the year in Romulus next month, and you can find more information below.
