We need to talk about EagleAI.
Don’t let the “AI” (artificial intelligence) in the name fool you. There’s nothing intelligent about relying on this private software in the critical process of voter roll maintenance — but we’re hearing that’s exactly what some right-wing extremists want from state and county governments responsible for list maintenance.
EagleAI markets itself to election officials as a program that can comb through voter rolls and other public databases and flag any so-called “discrepancies,” thereby enabling challenges to voters’ registrations.
However, experts say EagleAI does not offer improvements on existing bipartisan tools that help states maintain their voter rolls. To the contrary, experts expect EagleAI will open the door for thousands more erroneous voter registration challenges based on faulty and incomplete data. In other words, we believe this program will lead to ongoing attempts to silence the voices of voters ahead of a critical election.

We will not forget the efforts to challenge more than 360,000 Georgia voters before the 2021 U.S. Senate runoffs. And since then, with the passage of SB 202 in 2021, we’ve seen a staggering number of mass voter challenges filed — affecting 1 in every 70 Georgians. So far, the overwhelming majority have been dismissed due to faulty evidence.
By pitching itself as a tool to remove voters from the roll that is available to election boards and private individuals alike, EagleAI appears poised to empower conspiracy-peddling vigilantes to file discriminatory mass challenges, leading to voter intimidation and burdens on the election workers charged with reviewing challenges.
And since EagleAI is understood to be a privately owned program, using it in public election administration raises concerns around accountability and transparency.
