Yesterday, the NYIC and African Communities Together, along with our members and allies, held a "sleep-in" and rallied at Gracie Mansion to protect and defend NYC’s right-to-shelter policy, as Mayor Adams continues to challenge the policies in court and to scapegoat asylum seekers.

Instead of taking action to support and aid our most vulnerable New Yorkers, as well as our most recent arrivals, Mayor Adams wants to eliminate the City’s shelter obligations as we head into the cold winter months.

This year marks the 42nd anniversary of the right-to-shelter policy—42 years where thousands of New York residents’ lives were saved by simply having a safety net in their time of need—and our Mayor wants to end it.

Tell Mayor Adams we New Yorkers do not support this inhumane act and demand the right-to-shelter policy stay in place!

Tell Mayor Adams: Keep Right-to-Shelter!

Earlier this fall, the City announced it will limit shelter stays for immigrant families with children to 60 days and 30 days for single adult men as asylum seekers continue to arrive.

More recently, the Adams administration stated that it would start issuing tents to newly arrived asylum seekers, instead of offering shelter placements, in direct contradiction to New York City’s right to shelter policy.

As New York City continues to experience an affordability crisis, the City has to move from an emergency footing to implementing long-term solutions to solve the problem of our overburdened shelter system by moving people to permanent housing using housing vouchers.

Expanding CityFHEPS vouchers to all New Yorkers regardless of legal status could save the City an estimated $3 billion dollars annually and will put our newest arrivals on the road to self-sufficiency and stability.

The time for action is now!

Murad Awawdeh
Executive Director
