Friend, in honor of National Cancer Survivors Day today, I want to share my story of how this Make-A-Wish community provided me with life-changing hope and strength during my battle with cancer:
When I was 13, I underwent emergency surgery to remove a golf ball-sized tumor from the center of my brain – but the surgeon couldn’t remove all of it. When I woke up, I was paralyzed throughout the right side of my body. I had to learn to walk again.
During the next three years, I attended over 400 therapy appointments to regain strength, coordination and fine motor skills. Plus, eight months after surgery, an MRI revealed my tumor was growing again. So for almost two years, I also endured weekly chemo treatments. One drug caused side effects which made walking a challenge again. Another drug caused extreme nausea, and I lost a lot of weight.
About halfway through my chemo, I learned that my wish to watch my favorite college basketball team compete in the Maui Invitational Tournament was going to be granted.

As I worked to regain the use of the right side of my body, I dreamed about my wish. During all of the nights when I felt too sick to sleep, I dreamed about my wish. And during all of the days when I watched my friends have fun doing something that I was too sick to do, I dreamed about my wish.
On the day of the first game, my family and I got to attend a pregame shootaround where we met the team and spoke with the coaches and players. The team went on to win the tournament! Besides the amazing basketball experiences, we also enjoyed all that Maui has to offer – from riding bikes down a volcano to taking surfing lessons.
This once-in-a-lifetime experience motivated me to continue fighting – and today, I’m beating my tumor and living life to the fullest. That’s the power of a wish, and you can help more kids like me get this kind of life-changing experience as they fight a critical illness.
So please, in honor of National Cancer Survivors Day, will you make a transformational donation to help provide more kids with the strength and hope of a wish as they battle cancer and other critical illnesses?
