Hi John,
I want to tell you about a bold plan that could have a major impact on the climate crisis - and how you can support it today.
The science is irrefutable: fossil fuels are causing global heating. People in the global south are the least to blame, but they are already losing their lives and livelihoods. And we are all deeply fearful for our futures.
Yet somehow, fossil fuel giants are still raking in billions from their climate-wrecking activities. And our prime minister, Rishi Sunak, is dishing out oil and gas licenses like there’s no tomorrow.
There’s a way out of this. We need an exit plan from fossil fuels, and a growing global movement has a serious proposal. We’re joining them to demand the UK endorses the Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty, which would ban new fossil fuels and commit governments around the world to a just transition from coal, oil and gas.
With a general election on the horizon, we urgently need to get the Fossil Fuel Treaty on party leaders’ desks. Can you sign the petition now asking them to put a global exit plan in their election manifestos?

** A global movement
------------------------------------------------------------
If you support our campaign, you’ll be part of a growing global movement that’s demanding a Fossil Fuel Treaty. It’s spearheaded by countries in the global south which are leaders on climate, including Vanuatu, Fiji and Antigua and Barbuda.
“We are not measuring climate change in degrees of Celsius or tons of carbon but in human lives… We call for the development of a Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty to phase down coal, oil and gas production in line with 1.5 degrees Celsius and enable a global just transition for every worker, community and nation with fossil fuel dependence”
- President Nikenike Vurobaravu of the climate vulnerable island of Vanuatu, speaking at the 2022 UN General Assembly (1)
We’re still campaigning to make polluters pay for climate reparations. As long as corporate polluters are raking in billions, we’ll support this demand. But it's also time to think about the bigger question: how do we stop corporates’ polluting activities altogether, and pull the world back from the brink of disaster?
We need governments to take bold and swift action. That’s why we're embarking on a UK-wide push for a Fossil Fuel Treaty. The treaty would have three pillars:
1. No new fossil fuels
2. A fair phase-out of existing fossil fuels
3. A just transition to clean energy
Together these would provide a clear pathway out of our current crisis.
The climate crisis is escalating. The increase of ever more terrifying climate disasters around the world confirms it. So why are the oil giants which are causing the problem still able to make billions in profit? Why is the UK government scaling up taxpayer-backed oil and gas production?
Corporate power is out of control: big oil is driving the climate crisis, and our leaders are along for the ride. We need a solution that forces rich, polluting countries - like the UK - to fulfill their obligations to the global south. We need a plan that creates a global mandate for dismantling the climate-wrecking business models of polluting corporations.
Can you take the first step by joining our call on the party leaders to back a Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty today?

** Fast, fair and forever
------------------------------------------------------------
At a time of climate emergency, and during a cost-of-living crisis, the big oil companies continue to make eye-watering profits. The fossil fuel corporate lobby also spends more than £150 million annually to delay, control or block policies to tackle climate change.(2)
It’s obvious that we can’t rely on the fossil fuel industry to plan its own demise – companies are too concerned with their profits, and time is running out.
We need governments to step in. But the billions that can be made from fossil fuel production means that leaders won’t act to end it on their own. They need to know that other countries can’t make money out of coal, oil and gas too. We can use this obsession with competition to pressure global leaders into a coordinated end to fossil fuels.
Given the scale of the challenge ahead, international cooperation will be required. The Fossil Fuel Treaty campaign is an inspiring global movement with a plan for a fast and fair exit from fossil fuels.
‘Fossil fuels’ aren’t even mentioned in the Paris Agreement. Our leaders have gone along with oil giants’ distraction tactics of blaming the climate crisis on individual emissions. The Fossil Fuel Treaty will change that by committing countries to ending the extraction of fossil fuels.
As well as champions from climate-vulnerable countries in the global south, the campaign has already made major progress in the global north. The oil-producing state of California, the European Parliament, and major cities like London and Paris have endorsed the call for a Fossil Fuel Treaty.
Such broad support shows the power of the Fossil Fuel Treaty to bring together international leaders, including those from polluting states, to coordinate on an end to the fossil fuels which are a threat to all our futures. Now it’s time to start getting national decision-makers in big polluting states like the UK on board.
Can you sign our petition to party leaders, and tell them that voters want to see support for this plan in their election manifestos?

The challenge ahead is huge, but I truly believe a solution is within reach. You can help us get there.
