Dear Colleague,

The latest issue of the Clearinghouse’s quarterly research digest covers articles published from 1 July to 30 September 2023. The digest provides abstracts of articles from the peer-reviewed literature on male circumcision, with a focus on voluntary medical male circumcision (VMMC) for HIV prevention.

Featured Articles

  • An analysis of the results of two nationally representative surveys found that a 50 percent decrease in HIV prevalence among sexually active men in Eswatini from 2006–7 to 2016 was associated with an increase in VMMC.
  • A scoping review of interventions to reduce sexual risk behaviors among adolescent boys and young men in sub-Saharan Africa identified 29 studies in nine countries and provided evidence of positive effects on condom use, uptake of HIV testing and VMMC, and HIV knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors.
  • An evaluation of the implementation of systematic, comprehensive strategies to manage the quality of VMMC services in three regions of Namibia showed that clinical quality improved over time, with the rate of adverse events decreasing significantly over four years.

Other abstracts featured in the digest address costing of VMMC and other HIV services in Tanzania; evidence from five countries on the protective effects of VMMC against sexually transmitted diseases; the use of an HIV prevention cascade model to identify barriers to use of VMMC and other HIV prevention services in Zimbabwe; uptake of early infant male circumcision in Kenya and Zambia; and the age distribution of clients of VMMC services supported by the U.S. President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) in 15 African countries.
