Since the federal government’s public health emergency around COVID-19 ended this past March, more than 10 million people have been disenrolled from Medicaid in what’s been deemed the “Medicaid unwinding.”¹ More than 2 million of those purged from Medicaid are children who’ve lost their health care coverage, and in some states like Texas, the disenrollment rates are as high as 65 percent.¹ Additionally, over 70% of the disenrollments have occurred due to “procedural” reasons such as missing paperwork, and many of those affected should still be eligible.¹

This is the horrifying result of unnecessary administrative hurdles and the reversal of pandemic-era policies, and it would never have happened if we had Medicare for All.
