Reflecting on the March for Israel

[link removed]

The March for Israel was a beautiful moment, though one inspired by an alarming need.

I was there with so much of the ADL community and our friends and allies. Hundreds of thousands of people gathered, representing people across the country who are deeply committed to bringing the hostages home now and supporting Israel and Israelis in their time of need.

We were also there to speak out against the surge in antisemitism.

ADL’s latest survey, fielded after the Israel-Hamas war began, reveals a 316% increase in antisemitic incidents compared to a year ago. Almost 28 incidents per day on average.

These were Jews and non-Jews. These were Republicans and Democrats. We sang the U.S. national anthem. We sang Hatikvah. I mean, where else in America today could you see something like that?

This was a powerful reminder that America is more united than one may think on this issue — the vast majority of Americans stand with Israel and stand against antisemitism.

We will not rest. We will not pause. We will march on to Fight Hate for Good.
Sincerely,

Jonathan Greenblatt
CEO and National Director

Join Us for a Unity Shabbat This Weekend

[link removed]

Together, there is light amid a dark time. Make space for shared reflection and conversation with Jews around the country and join ADL for a special Unity Shabbat with AJC and the Jewish Federations this weekend, November 17-18.

On those days, we ask that all Jews — and others who are in solidarity with the Jewish community — light a memorial candle in honor of those who were murdered in Israel and those who gave their lives fighting for Israel. For more about this and all the ways to take part, visit

Testifying about Campus Antisemitism: ADL CEO Jonathan Greenblatt testified yesterday before the House Ways and Means Committee as part of a hearing about antisemitism amid the Israel-Hamas war and free speech on college campuses. As Jonathan reminded the House committee, we cannot tolerate a society in which students are threatened or intimidated. No parent should ever have to ask whether it's safe to send their kids to certain schools. It’s not free speech to incite, to intimidate or to threaten Jewish students simply because they are Jewish.

Fighting Hate in Brazil: ADL Chair Ben Sax and International Affairs leaders Marina Rosenberg and Liat Altman went to Brazil for the annual conference of the CONIB, that country’s major Jewish community organization. They raised awareness of the dangers of antisemitism, including in the U.S. as well as the threat of Iran. They signed an agreement with the CONIB to collaborate on ADL Education programs and incident reporting. ADL met with the Rio de Janeiro Jewish community to discuss collaboration on antisemitism education with leaders of the Latin American branch of Hillel International, a local Jewish day school and the recently inaugurated Holocaust Memorial and Museum.

Concern is Rising Country-wide: A year ago, the ADL Center for Antisemitism Research asked people for their views about the prevalence and severity of antisemitism in the U.S. Now, just weeks after Hamas’ terrorism struck Israel, we have monitored a massive rise in antisemitic incidents here and around the globe.

AI and the Israel-Hamas War: Promoters of conspiracy theories and hate are using generative artificial intelligence (GAI) to create misleading content about the Israel-Hamas war. This not only amplifies confusion and hate on social media; it can also cause some to doubt the validity of actual war images, creating unnecessary suspicion at a time of deeply polarized public opinion.

How Much Hate is on Social?: Since the brutal Hamas massacre on October 7, ADL has observed the spread of inflammatory language, misinformation about the conflict and hateful content online. To better understand how widespread it is, the ADL Center for Technology and Society surveyed over a thousand Americans about the hate and misinformation they are being exposed to on social media and in online games. 70% of participants stated that they had been exposed to at least one of several examples of misinformation or hate related to the conflict on social media.

We’re horrified that a Jewish-owned business, with a sign supporting Israel, was vandalized and that attempts were made to smash its windows on the 85th anniversary of Kristallnacht. We hope the culprit is identified and brought to justice soon.

Finally. Thank you, @Columbia, for enforcing your policies & acting in a way consistent with your legal & moral obligations to protect Jewish students. JVP & SJP’s violation of university protocol, continued use of threatening rhetoric & tactics of intimidation have no place on campus.
