As the son of two dedicated police officers, I grew up with a profound appreciation for the sacrifices and challenges that come with the duties of law enforcement.

My father, a police chief, and my mother, a former undercover narcotics agent, devoted their careers to upholding the law and faced the dangers that came with protecting our community.

Because of that, I can tell you firsthand that qualified immunity plays a crucial role in safeguarding the interests of police officers.

Qualified immunity serves as a legal doctrine that shields law enforcement officers from personal liability while performing their sworn duties, provided their actions do not violate clearly established constitutional rights. This protection lets officers make split-second decisions in high-stress situations without the fear of personal lawsuits.

It's also become an issue in this race.

For a police chief like my father, qualified immunity ensures he can carry out his duties and act decisively in situations that impact the entire force without the constant threat of legal repercussions to himself or his officers.

For my mother, qualified immunity was a safety net that allowed her to navigate the inherently unpredictable and dangerous world of undercover narcotics investigations.

The bottom line is that without that legal safeguard, I might not have been able to grow up with two loving and supportive parents.

Without qualified immunity, officers might be hesitant to take necessary risks and potentially jeopardize their own safety and the safety of those they are sworn to protect.

That’s why Eric’s support of qualified immunity and law enforcement means so much to me, and officers like my parents.

But some of our leaders are blind to its importance – like Mike Braun.
