When the Supreme Court voted 5-4 in the disastrous Citizens United decision, it opened the floodgates to Big Money in politics, giving millionaires, billionaires, and corporations immense influence in our democracy.
Americans for Tax Fairness research shows that in the 2022 midterm elections, billionaires spent $1 billion, 300 times what billionaires were spending on elections prior to Citizens United.[1] Additionally, our research shows that the family of Harlan Crow―Clarence Thomas’s billionaire benefactor―saw their political giving skyrocket by 862% immediately after Citizens United.[2]
The campaign donations of billionaires offer the clearest possible argument for why we have to get Big Money out of politics. Congress must act!

You might recognize Harlan Crow as the billionaire benefactor bankrolling Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas’s lavish lifestyle. Americans for Tax Fairness analyzed the Crow family’s political donations dating back to 1977 and found that their average yearly donations skyrocketed by 862% immediately after the disastrous 5-4 Citizens United Supreme Court decision, which opened the floodgates to unlimited spending in elections―and on which Clarence Thomas was the deciding vote.[1]
Separately, ATF has reported how billionaire spending in the 2022 midterm elections topped $1 billion for the first time, 300 times what billionaires were spending on elections prior to Citizens United.[2]
Millionaires, billionaires, and corporations are using their power and influence to undermine our democracy and elect candidates who share their world view of tax breaks for the wealthy and less opportunity for the rest of us.
