In the last midterm elections, Latino voters secured progressive victories
across the nation and helped elect the most diverse Congress in history -
with Latinos currently representing 10% of its membership. Yet, despite
our growing influence, we remain vastly underrepresented. Latina
representation is even lower, and Afro Latinas are nonexistent.
At Latino Victory, we know it isn’t just about electing leaders who look
like us, it’s about electing leaders who truly understand our experiences,
champion us in the halls of power, and use their platform to implement
policy changes that benefit our communities. We need to address the
structural barriers for Afro Latina candidates - and help them win - which
is why we are launching Afro Latinas Lead, a targeted initiative under the
First Latinas program.

Washington D.C. roundtable discussion | Puerto Rico roundtable discussion
In early October, Latino Victory convened a roundtable with Afro Latina
leaders and elected officials from across the country to discuss
opportunities and challenges to running for office. Just last week at the
SOMOS Conference, New York State Assembly Member Karines Reyes–Chair of
the New York State Puerto Rican/Latino Task Force and an Afro
Latina–shared that “We already have a formidable community of Afro Latinas
who would be phenomenal candidates for public office and it is critical to
build these coalitions. Let’s talk about how we reach them, recruit them,
and build resources needed to boost this bench.”
