Shamia knew that, according to the American Heart Association, Black and Hispanic people are 26% less likely to receive CPR at home and 57% less likely to receive CPR in public. Her organization, CPR with MIA, teaches CPR to underserved communities. Yet, Law was understaffed, had no business plan and was experiencing months of slow revenue. She needed someone to step in and help. Enter the Louisiana affiliate. Through the Community Navigator Pilot Program, Law developed the tools and resources needed to improve operations, diversify services, and increase revenue. She was even able to leverage her appearance on KLSA News Channel 12 to reach a wider audience. When speaking of individuals in her course, Shamia says, “It is my goal to make sure they are confident with performing CPR.” She wants them to know that they can “step in and help” too. |
