Desk of the Commissioner - November

Brad

"*Guest Column by Temporary Commissioner Brad Lindsay*"

Minnesota Veterans: You are appreciated. You are valued. You are remembered.

Those words were echoed many times over on Saturday, November 11 as the Minnesota Department of Veterans Affairs (MDVA) and the Commanders? Task Force (CTF) hosted the official State of Minnesota Veterans Day program. More than 400 people joined us at the Inver Grove Heights Veterans Memorial Community Center and another 400 viewed the program via livestream. The program was recorded and continues to be available on our website [ [link removed] ].

Meet Veteran Resident Russ Jorgenson: 99 years and Counting

Russ

Russ Jorgenson, 99 ? a Minneapolis Veterans Home Domiciliary program (DOMS) Resident ? is the poster child for a life well lived. He was happily married for more than six decades to his sweetheart until her death several years ago. He drove his own automobile up until 2022. No matter what part of his life story you ask him about (in particular, his time in the military), his memory is crystal clear and his attention to detail is spot on.

Everyone who knows him describes him as ?sharp as a tack.? He still speaks and reads the Norwegian language he learned as a child. He tells stories with great energy and joy. He eats (healthily) to live, he doesn?t live to eat. He smiles and laughs at the drop of a hat. And he says his life has meaning because he has a purpose: serving God and his fellow Veterans.

New State Veterans Homes Receive $30,000 Donation from Department of Minnesota Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 425

hopkins vfw

The Minnesota Department of Veterans Affairs (MDVA) extends its gratitude to the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) of Hopkins - George R. Wolff Post 425 for its generous donation in October of $30,000 to our three soon-to-open Veterans Homes in Bemidji, Montevideo and Preston. Each location will receive $10,000 to help purchase bingo equipment and support other onsite recreational activities.

Martin Adams, Commander, Post 425, says his VFW members were very pleased to vote on this donation to benefit future Preston, Bemidji and Montevideo Home Residents. ?Our post does everything it can to support Veterans, wherever they live in the community, and Veterans Homes are one important example of that commitment. In fact, we have a tradition of hosting bingo at the Minneapolis Veterans Home. It?s an activity that promotes camaraderie and even a bit of fun competition, and always delivers a great experience.?

Technology Helps Veterans Reduce Waste While Getting the Meals They Want

mpca

For Sheldon Weiss, a Resident at the Minnesota Veterans Home in Minneapolis, growing up during the Great Depression taught him the value of conserving food.

?Some spaghetti, a couple of meatballs, and a nice marinara sauce ? what more could you ask for?? he asks.

Not everybody at the Home joins Weiss in the clean plate club, however, which posed a challenge for the Minnesota Department of Veterans Affairs (MDVA): How to prevent food waste and at the same time provide ample and nutritious meals for its Residents. To solve that challenge, MDVA recently teamed up with the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency (MPCA) to implement new technology that will reduce the amount of food that is thrown away in its Homes. The technology allows us to know what our Residents want so they're more likely to eat the food on their plate. We also get a more accurate meal count and produce just what is needed so less goes to waste.

montevideo golf cart

With cooler temperatures and the knowledge that snow will be falling somewhere in our future, it may be a bit of a stretch to think about golf carts. But golf carts are expanding their presence and purpose beyond golf courses.?

The Minnesota Department of Veterans Affairs (MDVA) and the Minnesota Veterans Home - Montevideo were honored in October to accept the generous donation of an electric golf cart from Disabled American Veterans (DAV) Western Chapter 24 in Montevideo.

Ashley Bormann, Administrator, Montevideo Veterans Home, thanked the Chapter for its thoughtful donation. ?We appreciate this gift as it will help to improve our Veterans? sense of independence and expand the opportunities they have to engage in our recreational activities.?
