Using Lesser Known Portions of the Voting Rights Act, New Lawsuits Aim To Protect Voters ([link removed])

By Rachel Selzer

New York is one step closer to a fair map.
* Oral argument was held today ([link removed]) in a lawsuit that will determine if the state’s Independent Redistricting Commission must reconvene to draw a new congressional map for 2024. The lawsuit could ultimately impact control of the U.S. House of Representatives.
+ Republicans took issue with the idea of redrawing the map mid-decade, while Democrats argued the move was necessary to remedy violations of the law. For in depth insight into today's oral argument, read our takeaways ([link removed]) or scroll through ([link removed]) our live play by play.

Here are some other updates.
* The 11th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals heard ([link removed]) arguments this week in a lawsuit seeking to compel Alabama Secretary of State Wes Allen (R) to produce records about individuals with past felony convictions who were purged from the state's voter rolls since 2020.
* Kari Lake filed ([link removed]) a new brief in her election contest, asking an Arizona appeals court to decertify the 2022 gubernatorial election and order a new election. Lake lost the governor's race over a year ago. She is also a current U.S. Senate candidate.

Here’s what’s coming up.
* Tomorrow, as part of a lawsuit challenging two voter suppression laws, a federal court in Arizona will hold ([link removed]) oral argument over whether lawmakers are required to release documents related to the legislative process of both laws.
* This Saturday, Louisianians will vote in the secretary of state runoff race, choosing either Gwen Collins-Greenup (D) or Nancy Landry (R). Make your plan to vote on Nov. 18 and find your polling place here ([link removed]) !
