After the 2020 census, each state redrew its congressional and legislative district lines to be in line with population shifts. You’d think that’d be the end of the process, right?
Not so fast. Anti-voter lawmakers tried to weaken Black political power by manipulating redistricting. That’s illegal. States like Georgia, Alabama, Florida, South Carolina, and Ohio have found their maps in court. And now, in a victory for democracy, a federal court has ordered the Georgia legislature to re-do its maps to truly represent the diversity of our state’s electorate.
Make no mistake: Gerrymandering is part of a larger national agenda to try to block representation for marginalized groups and push ballot access further out of reach. All so power-hungry leaders can cling to power.
As extremists inevitably try to design additional unfair maps, we’ll fight back even harder to ensure that voters can make their voices heard — and we need you with us.
Will you chip in $20 to fuel our work and help stop future attacks on the freedom to vote?
Two weeks from today, Georgia lawmakers will start their special redistricting session. The fact that the court ordered this do-over reflects an important principle: Voters’ right to fair representation remains intact. It’s a win for Black voters and our democracy, representing a significant step toward ensuring the true voice of the people can, and will, be heard.
But our work isn’t over. Together with partners in the Peach State, Fair Fight Action is calling on legislators to conduct the work in public, allow Georgians time to review and provide input on the maps, and end gerrymandering that disadvantages minority voters.
We’ll keep working to make sure voters can make their voices heard — but we can’t do it all without you.
Pitch in $20 to help ensure our team has the resources we need to be successful in the fight for voting rights in elections and legislative sessions to come.
Thank you for your continued support,
The Fair Fight Action Team
