When Jamie Davis Smith was pregnant with her daughter, she pictured the long talks they’d have one day: “Silly talks at first while she was a toddler still learning to speak, gradually growing into heart-to-heart conversations about the best, and hardest, parts of life. This, of course, is how I would get to truly know and understand my daughter.” That’s not how it worked out — but she’s realized something even more important in the years since.
