Hi John,
It's me again - Karmella, the young Black trans woman living with HIV who emailed you on Monday. You know, the young organizer with the ECHO program here at Advocates for Youth? Anyway, turns out it's still Transgender Awareness Week! :)
So today I'm emailing you about yet another new resource from Advocates for Youth - a free online brochure called "I Think I Might Be Transgender." Best part? It's written BY trans youth, FOR trans youth. Take a look:
As I told you on Monday, when I was young I went from learning what transgender even meant, to accepting that I was a trans woman, to suddenly needing to grasp knowledge of HIV when I was diagnosed as a teenager. It was a lot, and it all would have been easier if I had access to "I Think I Might Be Transgender."
But it turns out, I did have access to this! Advocates for Youth released the first version in 2005 - I just never learned about it! That's where you come in. The brochure has been updated with new terminology and new stories from trans youth. Can you share this with someone today? Either share our Instagram post, or you can just send someone the link.
The journey to realizing you're trans can be a difficult one - I know it firsthand! But I'm glad trans youth today are working with Advocates for Youth to make materials like this available to all.
Happy Transgender Awareness Week,
Karmella Pettigrew (she/her)
