HOW SECURE YOUR VOTE VIRGINIA HELPED REPUBLICANS COMPETE IN EARLY AND ABSENTEE VOTING
IN CASE YOU MISSED IT: Spirit of Virginia Chairman Dave Rexrode posted an extensive thread today detailing the success of Secure Your Vote Virginia, the joint initiative Governor Glenn Youngkin launched with the Republican State Leadership Committee, the Republican Party of Virginia, and the Republican House and Senate Caucuses to help ensure Republicans competed in early and absentee voting.
As Rexrode notes, Secure Your Vote Virginia worked. Let’s dive into the data. |

REDUCING OUR ELECTION DAY DEFICIT
In the 10 targeted House districts where we ran the Secure Your Vote Virginia program, we saw remarkable improvement. On average, we cut the deficit our candidates faced on Election Day (compared to 2022) by 1,261 votes, a 49.5% reduction. |
In the 7 targeted Senate districts where we ran the Secure Your Vote Virginia program, we saw an even better improvement. On average, we cut the vote deficit our candidates faced on Election Day (compared to 2022) by 3,370 votes, a 51.7% reduction. |
TURNING OUT REPUBLICAN VOTERS
In the targeted Senate races, every Republican candidate got a higher percentage of the 2022 Republican vote than their opponent did of the 2022 Democrat vote, by an average of 6.4%. |
On the House side, it was a little closer, but still, in 8 of the 10 races, the Republican candidates once again exceeded the turnout percentage compared to their Democrat opponent. |

SUCCESS IN KEY DISTRICTS
Here are a few specific examples of success:
In House District 57, David Owen won this race by 715 votes. In 2022 we lost the early vote by 443 ballots, but in 2023 we won it by 613. That net change was the difference in this race alone. |
In Senate District 17, Emily Brewer won by 3,669 votes. In 2022 we lost the early in-person vote in this district by 3,369 votes. In 2023 we lost it by just 115, a net swing of 3,254. |
In Senate District 24, Danny Diggs defeated incumbent Senator Monty Mason by 725 votes. In 2022 we lost the early in-person vote in this district by 1,338 votes. In 2023, we WON it by 1,576 – a net swing of 2,914, more than the margin in this race alone. |
CASE STUDY
In House District 82, Kim Taylor was re-elected by 75 votes. The Secure Your Vote Virginia program saw us cut the Election Day deficit by 605 votes, more than 8 times her margin of victory. |
This district is a great case study of what we did with Secure Your Vote Virginia. |

BOTTOM LINE
Secure Your Vote Virginia worked because we made it a priority.
As Governor Youngkin said, we had to get Republicans off the sidelines and play by the rules of the game in early and absentee voting.
We used data to identify voters who could be persuaded to vote early, and we communicated with them often.
The Secure Your Vote Virginia effort was able to get low-propensity Republicans who often skip off-year elections to vote, got thousands of Republicans to become permanent absentee ballot voters, and built a playbook for future Republican successes.
Looking ahead to the 2024 Congressional elections in Virginia, consider that three battleground Congressional districts in Virginia all had multiple targeted General Assembly races within their borders. Because of Secure Your Vote Virginia, there are now thousands of Republicans who are willing to vote early, and our candidates will know who they are and how to contact them.
As Governor Youngkin made clear many times, what we did with Secure Your Vote Virginia isn’t proprietary.
Governor Youngkin wants every Republican candidate to learn from our successes and put it to use to win. ### |
