Johh — Yesterday, I voted for the CR to keep our government open without far-right policy riders. Here’s why:
I’m tired of the cycle this country is in. House GOP leaders announce plans for short-term government funding bills, only to have the rug pulled out from under them by Freedom Caucus Republicans who tank the bills. For me and my colleagues, shutting down the government right before Thanksgiving was not an option.
Going into the vote, I knew that not only would the shutdown leave federal workers without paychecks, but it would impact critical functions of programs like Social Security, WIC, the military, and Medicare. Petty Republican infighting should not be the reason American families can't put food on the table this holiday season.
Our government should not be a partisan game played any time there is a decision to be made. So once again, Democrats stepped up to put people over politics.
But, Johh, this should not be our new normal. The CR only extends funding temporarily, there is still the question of a shutdown in 2024. We can’t let Republicans keep plunging our government into crisis every time a decision needs to be made.
If you haven’t already, now’s the time to start gearing up for the 2024 election. This election will determine if we’re going to build on the progress we’ve made or if we’re going to continue this division and chaos.
