John,
Last week, Senate Democrats on the Judiciary Committee had hoped to hold a vote to subpoena billionaire Harlan Crow and right-wing activist Leonard Leo about their roles in the Republican takeover of the Supreme Court, and their continued corrupt influence over certain justices, including Clarence Thomas, that is threatening our ability to effectively tax billionaires, regulate the financial services industry, and protect our environment.
But Republicans on the committee blocked the vote, with Sen. Josh Hawley (R-MO), best known for his support of the January 6th insurrection, calling it “a witch hunt against Justice Thomas.” Republicans threatened to file nearly 90 amendments on completely irrelevant issues. Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) said, “You’re going to have a complete s**tshow but if that’s what you want, that’s what you’re gonna get.”[1]
In an effort to preempt reform efforts, the Court unveiled this week a new, completely toothless ethics code of conduct that experts have decried as nothing more than a public relations stunt designed to distract from Thomas’s scandals and those of his colleagues.
Thankfully, Democrats on the committee are not backing down in their demands for a Supreme Court code of ethics to hold justices accountable and they could vote tomorrow to subpoena Harlan Crow and Leonard Leo.
Sign now to tell the Senate Judiciary Committee to subpoena billionaire Harlan Crow and right-wing judicial activist Leonard Leo to testify about how multiple Supreme Court justices have been bought and paid for by billionaire benefactors.
Justice Clarence Thomas is the longest serving justice who has accepted—and failed to report—lavish gifts from billionaire benefactors in his more than two decades on the bench. But he is not alone.
In just a few weeks, the Court is set to hear a case that could have major implications on our ability to tax corporations and billionaires.
Together, we’re holding conflicted Supreme Court justices and their billionaire benefactors accountable.
Add your name and tell the Senate Judiciary Committee to act this week to subpoena billionaire Harlan Crow and right-wing activist Leonard Leo for their roles in the billionaire takeover of the Supreme Court.
The Court has already demonstrated a complete inability to hold itself accountable for numerous ethical lapses and conflicts of interest. That means it’s up to us and Congress to hold conflicted justices accountable.
Thank you for taking action today,
