LCV’s policy team is on Capitol Hill monitoring fast-moving developments as Congress debates a critical budget deal with a government shutdown looming.

The House is trying to rush through a series of funding bills as we move closer to that deadline — and extreme Republicans are fighting to sneak through dozens of anti-environmental provisions. MAGA extremist Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene has pushed an amendment that defunds the White House’s climate policy office. Another GOP amendment would block President Biden’s climate executive orders. The list goes on and on.

Here’s why this matters, Friend: These are must-pass bills. If Congress doesn’t reach a deal on these or a stopgap measure, the government will shut down just in time for Thanksgiving. That means there’s a serious risk that the last-minute budget negotiations could spiral out of control as extreme Republicans attempt to jam their provisions into a deal.
