Dear John,
Lawmakers in 19 states have debated whether or not transgender athletes belong in sports (spoiler alert: they do). These states include: Alabama, Arizona, Colorado, Georgia, Idaho, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, New Hampshire, Ohio, South Carolina, Tennessee, Washington and West Virginia.
Targeting transgender youth with bills that would prevent student athletes from participating in the sport they love is just the latest way to attack transgender people. But let’s remember what this is really about: whether LGBTQ people should be treated fairly across all areas of life—or whether they can be unfairly fired, kicked out of a restaurant, denied an apartment, or denied the health care they need, just because of who they are.

High school is hard enough for transgender students, who often face bullying, harassment and mistreatment because of their gender identity. We can keep a level playing field and still include transgender students in sports. No transgender child should be singled out for further bullying and discrimination.
So far this year, no bills targeting transgender student athletes have been signed. That could change rapidly as states like Alabama, Missouri, Louisiana, Tennessee, and Idaho all have bills we are watching closely. State-based groups like PROMO and Louisiana Trans Advocates are putting on the full court press to defeat bad sports bills. Your support helps us increase constituent contacts, uplift stories in the media, and share lessons from states that have defeated similar bills.
