Dear John,
On Sunday, President Biden authorized strikes on militia groups reportedly connected to Iran in Syria, leaving several dead and triggering reprisal strikes. Since October 17, these groups have fired dozens of rockets and drones against U.S. bases in Syria and Iraq, and Sunday’s air strikes represented the third such reprisals that Biden has ordered in the same amount of time.
Each time these tit-for-tat strikes happen, they come with serious risks. If a U.S. soldier is killed by a rocket linked to Iran, or if militia leaders or Iranian military leaders are killed in reprisal strikes, it brings us one more rung up the escalation ladder towards a full-blown regional war. The horrific war in Gaza that has killed over ten thousand people including over 4,000 children, could be a prelude to an even wider and more devastating war that engulfs the region and all of its people.
Bombings beget more violence, not peace. Negotiations and political solutions, not military ones, have proven to be the only successful strategy at reducing tensions and averting war and more human suffering. Now, with emotions running high, cooler heads must prevail. And securing a ceasefire is the only way Israelis and Palestinians can prevent further loss of life and pave the way for a serious de-escalation of regional tensions. NIAC and our coalition partners have been advocating [[link removed]] for this on Capitol Hill but we still need your help.
