Dear Friend,
The Sentry’s first report on Libya, published last week, outlines how a “rapid ongoing surge in corruption, looting, and organized crime perpetrated by Libya’s current rulers threatens the survival of the country’s essential institutions, including the nation’s vital oil sector.”

With vast oil and gas reserves, a strategically important location in the eastern Mediterranean, and a population of around seven million, Libya has remarkable wealth and economic potential. Yet more than a decade after the fall of dictator Muammar Qadhafi, its leaders are more interested in lining their own pockets than in securing the country’s future.

We know there are many things competing for your attention right now, but we want to make sure you caught this warning: “Unless bolder international policies are adopted, a relapse into armed conflict is a distinct possibility.”

Corruption in Libya has been viewed for too long as an unfortunate but stable internal problem without international security implications. But the current boom in the trafficking of drugs, fuel, and human beings, as well as the outright theft of billions of dollars in public assets, is transforming the country into a hub for transnational crime and an increasing threat to regional and international security.

The Sentry’s investigators are following these dirty money trails to uncover the many complex schemes used by Libya’s corrupt leaders to steal and launder public funds. We will use the evidence to push for structural reforms, create accountability for those who systematically violate human rights, and ensure that these stolen funds are used for public good, not private enrichment.

Above all, our goal is to put Libya on a path towards a more peaceful, inclusive, and economically sustainable future.

We cannot do this work without your help. Please donate today to support The Sentry in the fight against corruption and conflict in Libya and beyond. [[link removed]]

Sincerely,
John Prendergast
