Jack, this weekend, Trump took to his for-MAGA-only social network to pledge that he "will root out the Communists, Marxists, Fascists, and Radical Left Thugs that live like vermin." One Yale professor said it was "textbook 'Mein Kampf'" and former Republican congressman-turned-MSNBC host Joe Scarborough had to ask "if it sounds like Naziism, if it walks like Naziism ..."
Trump's rantings have become completely unhinged—and that is really saying something considering how far off the rails he was to begin with. But you wouldn't know that if you looked at traditional news outlets, who continue to handle Trump with kid gloves. Look at this side-by-side comparison of how the New York Times covered Hillary Clinton's "deplorables" remark to Trump's open embrace of fascism. Or check out their front-page coverage of Trump's trial last week, which was written by the paper's fashion critic!
It isn't just the New York Times, though. American news media is so addicted to "both sides" coverage that it is bending over backward to give Biden and Trump the same level of criticism. But with the two men so, so far apart in terms of temperament, qualifications and level of scandal, that means overhyping everything about Biden to a ludicrous extreme while downplaying the threats of a would-be dictator.
Trump's rhetoric isn't normal. The leading candidate for a major party presidential nomination being facing scores of criminal charges isn't normal. The news media shouldn't treat these things like they are. Daily Kos doesn't. We never will. We don't cater to bull$#@! "both sides" coverage. We are a proudly progressive, independent news outlet and our work is more necessary now than it ever has been. Please take one minute right now to donate $5 to support our work.
