End-Of-Life Care
The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) developed the Medicare Care Choices Model (MCCM) to test whether offering Medicare beneficiaries access to end-of-life services would improve their quality of life and reduce Medicare expenditures.
Keith Kranker and coauthors compare deceased MCCM enrollees with those enrolled in traditional Medicare ([link removed] ) , and determine that MCCM enrollees were less likely to receive an aggressive life-prolonging procedure in the last thirty days of life and less likely to have multiple acute hospitalizations in the last thirty days of life, among other findings.
MCCM enrollees also had, on average, lower Medicare expenditures than those enrolled in traditional Medicare, fewer inpatient admissions and ED visits, and more frequent use of hospice.
The authors conclude that the MCCM program is promising, and that these results highlight the importance of transforming care delivery at the end of life to improve both beneficiaries’ and caregivers’ experiences.
