John,
According to AP News, last Tuesday’s state Supreme Court election in PA was “unlike any other. There was record-breaking spending, national media coverage, and the highest turnout for an odd-year election in at least a quarter-century.”
Our CEO, Kadida Kenner, was quoted in the article, talking about how these high-profile judicial races are the product of Republican-backed efforts to overturn elections.
“This is the future, and I don’t think we’re going back from this,” Kenner said. “And I think our judicial races will be even more partisan in the future.”
We are proud to have turned out voters in support of Judge McCaffery this election cycle. But, with Pennsylvania proving once again to be a top battleground state, the work is far from over. NPP will continue to center historically disenfranchised and underrepresented Black, Indigenous and other people of color, immigrant communities and the youth in our work as we prepare for 2024. Will you help us get started by donating $5 today?
Here’s the breakdown of what we accomplished:
In support of Judge McCaffery, the New Pennsylvania Project…
🚪 Knocked on more than 18,000 doors.
📲 Sent 14,000 text messages to potential voters.
☎️ Made 26,000 phone calls.
We went ALL OUT. And it worked: Pennsylvania set a record high for turnout during an odd-year election. Turnout increased from 2.52 million in 2019 to 2.76 million in 2021 and 3.04 million this year. Part of that record-high turnout was achieved by the thousands of conversations that NPP staff had with voters.
You don’t have to take it from us. Here is a story of one of those conversations:
I ran into a voter coming from another house on Broad St and I asked her if she was voting today and she stated that this election was not as important as next year's election for President so I explained to her the importance of the courts as it relates to the rights of the people, especially women. She thought about it, and while she was thinking I said "This may be the most important thing you do this year." She said, "You are going to make me want to vote" so she asked for advice on who to vote for. I gave her the voter education guide and the door hanger with Dan McCaffery at the top then I explained to her that the reason that he is at the top was he has to win the most important position of all, which is PA Supreme Court Justice. He has told all of us that he will hold the line against Republicans taking away our voting rights, women's access to abortions, clean water and air and also school funding. She agreed and she is going to her polling place right now to vote for the Democratic lineup featuring Judge Dan McCaffery.
Our tactics work. Now, we have our eyes set on 2024.
We will quickly turn our attention back to year-round civic education and voter registration in addition to preparing for the 2024 Presidential election and other critically important judicial seats on the ballot in 2025. But we need your help.
Thanks to you, we are expanding democracy by transforming and expanding the Pennsylvania electorate. We have already seen the impact of our work in 2022 and 2023; now, we are preparing for 2024 and beyond. Will you help us continue to move Pennsylvania forward by rushing $5 today?
