A product may be labeled as "compostable" or "biodegradable", but what actually happens if it ends up in the environment?

5 Gyres' new report, Better Alternatives 3.0, provides a first-of-its-kind look at how bioplastic products and packaging break down in real-world environments. The 64-week study tested 22 items, including straws, thin film, utensils, and bottles, in six environments across Florida, California, and Maine.

The report offers greater transparency around these materials, their real-world behavior in the environment, and considerations that should be made before the widespread adoption of bioplastics in all sectors of society.
