Dear NRDC Action Fund Activist,
The federal government has just days left to fund the government — but instead of working on a bipartisan solution to avert a shutdown, MAGA extremist Republicans in the House are passing increasingly reckless bills that would gut environmental protections, turn back the clock on environmental progress, and endanger our planet.
The Democratic victories in Virginia and across the country in last week’s elections show that the majority of Americans want lawmakers who are not out-of-step extremists and who are ready to act on critical problems like climate change.
Tell Congress enough is enough! Reject these dangerous attempts to gut climate protections and focus on funding the government for the benefit of all Americans.
From the moment the GOP took over the House, MAGA Republicans have prioritized padding the pockets of their pro-polluter allies at every turn, throwing government into permanent chaos and threatening environmental destruction.
Here are just a few of the dangerous provisions in the House GOP’s funding bills:
- Gutting enforcement of our clean air and clean water laws by slashing the overall budget of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) by nearly 40%, and completely eliminating provisions aimed at helping lower-income and underserved communities fight climate change and pollution in their neighborhoods
- Undermining President Biden’s recent climate wins by cutting funding for the landmark Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) — the largest climate action in U.S. history — and threatening our health, land, water, and communities to help polluters
- Rolling back the Endangered Species Act (ESA), sneaking through votes on delisting vulnerable species and cutting agency funding to protect wildlife and critical habitat
- Threatening tens of thousands of jobs in clean energy and clawing back funds meant to construct more green buildings
- Blocking vital public health protections like the removal of lead from water pipes
After another year of worsening heat waves, flooding, and wildfire smoke, slashing climate protections is unacceptable — and tying those cuts to must-pass spending bills is immoral.
We must show MAGA Republicans that we are fed up with their constant attempts to block clean energy in favor of more climate-wrecking fossil fuels — and this time, at the expense of a fully-funded federal government.
Congress is debating our climate future right now — send your message before it’s too late.
Thank you, as ever, for fighting with us.
Sincerely,
Kevin S. Curtis
