Once again, Republican in-fighting has stalled any ability to move legislation through the House that the Senate would adopt or the White House sign. And once again, the impacts of their holding our government hostage will impact the lives of thousands of Connecticuters: -
Tens of thousands of federal employees, active duty military, and civilian defense personnel in Connecticut would stop getting paid.
- The 47,000 Connecticut residents who rely on the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children (WIC) for food assistance would lose benefits.
-
Head Start, the federally funded early learning and education program for our youngest residents, could close down if the shutdown lasts beyond a week or so.
- The quality of local drinking water could decline, as routine inspections by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency could decrease or stop altogether.
-
Farmers in Connecticut, many of whom operate small farms, could lose access to federally backed farm loans.
- Federal discretionary grants administered to local governments by federal agencies would be unavailable for reimbursement, creating a financial strain and potential closures at the local level.
In what might be the most aggravating move, MAGA Speaker Mike Johnson sent Congress home early last Friday instead of working in an urgent, bipartisan way to do the bare minimum of what Congress is supposed to do - keep government operational.
It’s yet another example of what happens when MAGA Republicans are in charge and why Democrats need to take back the House to put an end to this kind of arsonist politics.
We can’t allow the MAGA Republicans to continue to bring our country to the brink. Please consider making a contribution today and help Democrats defeat this extremist movement. Otherwise, we’ll be facing this kind of deja vu over and over again. Thanks, Sarah Locke Executive Director |
