Dear Friend,
As tension rises in the Israel-Gaza conflict, Elon Musk’s Twitter/X is failing to act on the spread of vile hate, propaganda, and disinformation.
We reported 200 posts promoting antisemitism, Islamophobia & anti-Palestinian hate to X (formerly Twitter) via its official reporting tools. All posts were in clear violation of the platform’s policies against hateful content, which prohibit racist slurs, dehumanization, and hateful imagery. A week later, X kept hosting 98% of this despicable content.
Here’s what we found:
- The majority of the posts incited violence against Muslims, Palestinians, and Jewish people.
- In total, the posts that remained up have accrued 24,043,693 views.
- Out of the 101 accounts in the study, only one was suspended and a further two “locked”.
- X kept hosting 81 hateful posts from 43 verified users - those who pay $8 a month for algorithmic boosting. Only one post from a blue check account was taken down.
Demand that Twitter/X enforce their rules and take down vile antisemitism, islamophobia and hate.
These alarming findings show that X is utterly failing to stop the spread of hate and disinformation. In times of conflict, online hate is even more likely to lead to real-world violence.
When social media companies fail to act, people’s lives can be truly at risk. The spread of hate is not a game, we can’t leave the controller in Elon Musk’s hands. Governments, lawmakers and regulators must act to hold social media giants accountable.
