Indivisibles,

The deadline to avoid a shutdown is this Friday and MAGA Republicans are, once again, pushing us to the brink.

The only viable path to prevent a shutdown at this point is through the passage of another continuing resolution (here’s our resource on continuing resolutions (CR) from when Republicans brought us to the brink in September).

As Republicans try to kick the can down the road with another CR, it is important to remember that:

  1. This is completely a mess of their own making.
  2. They ousted the previous speaker of the House over this same issue, and Mike Johnson is doing no better, reaffirming that this is an issue of Republican extremism and general inability to govern rather than a ‘leadership’ issue.
  3. Republicans aren’t trying to avert a shutdown with a CR. They’re only trying to buy themselves more time to attempt to enact extremist cuts to public programs, abortion restrictions, and attacks on Medicare and Social Security.

Unfortunately, Republicans stalled the House for so long with their speaker dysfunction that there is no time for a clean, full-year government funding bill. Democrats are ready and willing; we need Republicans to pass a clean CR immediately, and then pass a clean, full-year budget after. That’s where you come in: If you have a Republican representative, use this link to call their office right now and demand they do their jobs and fund our government.

It is irresponsible that House Republicans have allowed this potential crisis to occur again through nothing but their own negligence and greed. Call and demand they stop playing games.

Crisis in Israel/Palestine

**Content Warning: Talk about the current Israeli/Palestinian conflict. Jump to the line break if you need to avoid this topic**

As of today, the Palestinian death toll in Gaza has risen above 11,240, including 4,630 children and 3,130 women. Israel’s five-week-long bombardment -- including airstrikes hitting hospitals, UN shelters, schools, and refugee camps -- and its ongoing actions to cut off life-sustaining supplies are widely recognized by human rights groups to be collective punishment. As United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said last week, the Gaza Strip is becoming a “graveyard of children.”

The violence has spiraled into attacks on Palestinians in the West Bank -- and the risk of further escalation into regional war grows by the hour. Many of the families of the hostages still held by Hamas are also expressing anger and fear about the safety of their loved ones in the bombardment zone.

Since October 7, Indivisible has clearly and completely condemned Hamas’ attacks on Israelis, Americans, and foreign citizens. We continue to call for the release of the hostages. But right now, we’re focused on where we have advocacy leverage: the US government’s relationship with Israel.

The most important thing that we -- as Indivisibles -- can do in this moment is pressure our members of Congress to join the growing chorus from around the world for a humanitarian ceasefire to prevent the further loss of civilian life and escalation of the human suffering on the ground.

Here’s what you can do:

  1. Call both your senators now and urge them to call for a humanitarian ceasefire publicly and to use their position to push for an end to hostilities, to deliver urgently needed humanitarian assistance, and to ensure the hostages are released.
  2. Call your representative and ask them to do the same.

 Your 5 weekly to-dos

  1. If you have a Democratic representative, join our Making a Majority Cohort Call this Tuesday, November 14 at 8pm ET/5pm PT. Join our final Making a Majority Cohort call where we’ll be discussing the potential government shutdown, Americans’ everyday economic wellbeing, and how we’ll move our Democratic districts into 2024 while we get your insight and feedback into the campaign itself over the past year. Help us make sure we are launching into the election year, setting up blue districts in the best manner possible.
  2. If you have a Republican representative, join our Our States, Our Fates call this Thursday, November 16 at 8pm ET/5pm PT. We are less than a year out from the election. With Trump’s numbers still holding strong, we will need to pull out every stop we have to beat back the MAGA takeover of our government, and that starts with our red districts. In this meeting, we’ll be focusing specifically on what we can do to combat MAGA state and local election subversion.
  3. If you have a Republican representative, write a letter to the editor (LTE) to hold your representative accountable for driving us toward a shutdown. For the third time this year, House Republicans are driving us to the brink of a crisis. Instead of governing, they have wasted their time on a baseless impeachment inquiry and the childish infighting that led to the election of one of the most far-right speakers of the House in history. Write an LTE to let your community know they need to hold your representative responsible for their reckless actions.
  4. If you have a Democratic representative, call and tell them to hold the Supreme Court accountable by cosponsoring the Supreme Court Ethics, Recusal, and Transparency Act (SCERT). SCOTUS is facing a legitimacy crisis with MAGA justices like Clarence Thomas and Samuel Alito accepting lavish gifts from billionaires. These actions call into question their ability to be impartial and fair in their rulings. Check out our new unrigging the Supreme Court page to learn more and take action. When you’re done, call your representative again and demand they cosponsor the Judiciary Act of 2023. The court has been stacked with extreme MAGA justices, and the only way to protect our rights is to expand the court. Call now to make it happen!
  5. If you have a Democratic senator, call and tell them to hold the Supreme Court accountable by cosponsoring the SCERT Act. We must pass SCERT through both chambers in order to restore legitimacy to the court. It is clear that the highest court in the land must be held to reasonable ethical standards. Call now to make sure your senator agrees. When you’ve finished, call your senator again and demand they cosponsor the Judiciary Act of 2023. In addition to the ethics crisis, we’ve seen just how far-right the court-packing MAGA Republicans have pushed the Supreme Court. Expansion is the only way we return to a balanced and fair judiciary before it is too late.

P.S. In case you missed Leah's message yesterday, we've launched the "Giving a Sh*t Tuesday" campaign, running through midnight tomorrow, November 14. This isn’t about raising the most dollars we can -- but showing how much this movement gives a, you know, about winning in 2024, and setting ourselves up to do it. Instead of a dollar goal, we’re setting a goal of 1,000 donations toward our 2024 election work. Help show that our network gives a damn about saving our democracy, and chip now -- or if you aren’t in a position to give today, please sign up to volunteer with us here. And stay tuned for fundraising we're planning for Giving Tuesday, November 28 to help us raise funds for humanitarian relief.

Endorsements Guide >>

Hard to believe it, but the 2024 elections are just around the corner!

In addition to doing the essential work of rooting out MAGA extremists at every level of government, we have the opportunity to elect the strongest Democrats to champion progressive priorities and defend progressive values. Since 2018, our movement has been doing just that: building power by helping to elect the next generation of bold leaders at every level of government. Indivisible groups across the country have pushed candidates on issues that matter, contacted thousands of voters, and shown that the power of our movement is impossible to ignore.

If your group is considering getting involved in 2024 elections, one of the most powerful ways you can have an impact is by making endorsements. We know elections can be intimidating! We also know that an endorsement, done correctly, is one of the most powerful tools to create change. This guide demystifies the process with advice on how best to engage in both primary and general elections.

WE LOVE TO SEE IT!

***In the 2023 Indivisible Guide, one of the most important things we wanted to see was our representatives show up as fighters! We need representatives that work for the people, not just their bank accounts and special interests! So, why not highlight those fighters? We Love To See It! will highlight the work being done by reps fighting for everyday people’s wellbeing, advancing democracy, and/or protecting personal freedoms. Let’s stand up for our representatives when they stand up for us! We Love To See It!***

Rep. Mike Levin, CA-49

Mike Levin speaking in front of a lecturn on C-SPAN

We know that the Supreme Court is having an ethics crisis, and so does Mike Levin.

It is time that we use every tactic at our disposal to rein in the dysfunction and corruption on SCOTUS. Mike Levin brought forward a new tactic by submitting an amendment that would have withheld funding to the Supreme Court until the justices adopted a real, enforceable code of ethics.

He stated that a SCOTUS code of ethics, “...would have restored public confidence in this institution. It would have helped to solve one of the many problems our voters sent us to Washington, DC to fix -- the corrupt power of money in politics and our judicial system.”

Rep. Levin introduced his amendment last week, but just today we saw an announcement from the Supreme Court that they were instituting a “code of ethics” that is nothing more than some unenforceable guidelines riddled with loopholes. This only underscores Rep. Levin’s point -- it’s clear that SCOTUS cannot be trusted to regulate itself, and Congress must step in. Watch Rep. Levin’s statement here.

**Bonus Points: If you see your rep showing up as a fighter and want to highlight them, reply to this email with a link to the story and we might feature it in our next Newsletter.**
